The map of Kitwe as it was in 1961 is a historical gem made available to KitweOnline and to all our readers and educational institutions in Zambia by Dave Cooper, the founder of Great North Road website. Zambia was then called Northern Rhodesia and most names reflected the tastes of the British settlers who named places and streets after familiar places back home in Britain.

(The Great North Road was a reference to the Great North Road that started in London, England, and led to Edinburgh in Scotland. In Northern Rhodesia, it referred to Cecil John Rhode’s dream road that would lead from Cape Town in South Africa and go all the way up to Cairo in Egypt. Unfortunately, the road turns at Kapirimposhi towards Tanzania and does not pass through Kitwe).

The map shows the old street names. It is accompanied by an Index that gives three numbers for the vertical line to the left of each point and another three numbers for the grid line below the point. The first two digits refer to the grid numbers shown along the top edge and sides of the map. The third digit represents an imaginary line that you get when you divide each square into ten little squares across and ten little squares going from the bottom to the top grid line.
