This week saw another gathering of African fashion power houses in Kitwe. The theme was the promotion of African fashion and Arts and its contribution to World peace.
Now in its third year, Kitwe Fashion Week saw the likes of Nkana Fashions, Monze Fashion Guru, Alba, ZamFas, X-Calibur, Naomi House and Dean Fashions represented. The show was attended by members of the press and government and civil officials.

The explosion of African fashion on the world scene shows no slow down. There were different magazines on display displaying the work of various well known fashion journalists, bloggers and websites.
African design is coming into prominence on the catwalks of London, New York, Paris and Milan. This is explains why there has been 7 fashion weeks in three continents dedicated to African designers. Kitwe Fashion week seeks to rival Dakar Fashion Week, Arise Fashion and Africa Fashion Week.
One notable absentee at this year’s show was Zambia’s fashion designer, Smart Phiri. He is currently preparing for his trip to London where he will represent Zambia at London Fashion Week. The event will be held at Somerset House on 16th -20th September, 2011. Phiri laid out a brilliant display of his fashion designs, Smart Designers, at this year’s Zambia Fashion Week last April.
Sam Phiri is currently looking for sponsors to enable him attend the London event.
A lot of people are looking forward to seeing the work of this year’s Zambia Fashion And Designers Award winner, Towani Clarke of Kutowa Designs. Other upcoming designers to look out for are Charity Nyirongo, Raymond Mulenga, Chiza Ngulube, Correta Anold, Petros Ginnakakis, Monde Ndana, Nada, Harriet Biimbe, Suilanji, Natasha Sinyangwe and Katongo Chileshe.
