On 5th November, the newly formed Mpelembe Drama Club performed an excerpt of the play currently in rehearsal, an adapation by Themba Daka of Woyengi, written by Obutunde Ijimeri. Woyengi is an African myth on creation. Woyenji is a goddess who creates her creatures then asks them to choose their fate before stepping into the world.

 

The children were a bit nervous at first, being their first time ever on stage, but they pulled it off very well. The school has been a great source of encouragement, particularly the principal herself, Margaret Chilando.

 

In the photo below, three of the cast members, from my class, that were in the excerpt are Clara, Kukuya and Andrew. The play will be on stage for the whole school hopefully on 1st December, 2011.
