Global pandemic of COVID-19 affected our daily lives and our business in many ways. Creative industry is put on hold as well which makes it difficult for local artists to earn living. However, the “New Normal” has also challenged entrepreneurs and business man and women in creating of new opportunities and exploring online possibilities. Film Industry is no exception.
Famous and popular 48 Hour Film Project (48 HFP) – a worldwide filmmaking competition for film enthusiasts – that gives each team exactly 48 hours to write, shoot and produce 5-7 minutes long film is now also registered in Kitwe – giving a chance to ALL Zambian filmmakers to take part.
“48 Hour Film Project is happening in over 130 cities around the world and we are very happy that Zambian filmmakers can be part of it,” said Martina Mwanza – one of the two 48 HFP Kitwe producers. Running the biggest Film Festival in Zambia, the SOTAMBE International Film and Arts Festival for the past 7 years, she said that Zambian Filmmakers are more than ready for the Global competition of such a nature.
With the 48 HFP Kitwe city co-producer David J.V. Schobl, they are very excited to already have 9 Zambian filmmaking teams registered for the special online challenges created during the pandemic. According to Schobl, who is also a 48 HFP producer for another 3 cities in Europe it shows enthusiasm and hunger of Zambian filmmakers to be noticed by the international audience.
Due to the global situation and various restrictions in different countries, the organisers of 48 HFP came up with the 48 HOUR GLOBAL FILMMAKING CHALLENGE to connect filmmakers around the world online. The Global Competition will take place in weekend of 5 – 7 June 2020 and Kitwe City in Zambia is the only town registered on the African continent! The winner is therefore going to represent whole Africa worldwide!
HOW DOES IT WORK?
On Friday 5 June 2020, 19 hrs, all registered filmmakers will receive an email with genre, sentence to be used, description of a character and one prop to be used, and then they have only 48 hours to script, shoot and edit 5-7 minutes film! The short film has to be uploaded online on Sunday 7 June 2020, latest by 19:30 hrs!
The judging and voting will be done online and winning team will receive 500 USD! In addition, winning movies will be screened at Filmapalooza 2021 (48 HFP International Film Festival) and Cannes 2021 – Short Film Corner.
“This is a great opportunity for bolt Zambian Filmmakers to show the world their creativity and spirit to compete internationally. The 48 HFP is not about professionalism but rather creative ideas, team work and motivation to succeed,” said Martina Mwanza who encouraged both seasonal and aspiring Zambian filmmakers to take part in this challenging competition. “Filmmakers always look for a platform where they can be noticed and recognised and 48 Hour Global Film Challenge is exactly such a platform!“

48 Hour Film Project Kitwe – is part of the global platform – 48 Hour Film Project – that was establised in 2001 and since then it is the biggest filmmaking competition organised in over 130 cities world-wide. It is a wild and sleepless weekend in which registered teams make a movie – write, shoot, and edit – in just 48 hours!
The city of Kitwe was added in 2020 by Martina Mwanza and David J.V. Schobl in order to boost film industry in Zambia.
