Learn NYANJA Language

The Nyanja / Chewa language is one of the most commonly spoken languages in Zambia. It is also used in Malawi and Mozambique.

We currently do not have lessons in Nyanja.

We are still looking for a volunteer Nyanja speaker to start these lessons.

In the mean time, you can use the following FREE RESOURCES.

Iv have learnt that nyanja and chichewa are slightly different languages. If you speak Chichewa in Zambia they will say you are from the village….like mufuna madzi? mafuna madzi?

In Malawi, Nyanja and Chewa are the same language. It is the native language of the Chewa people, and therefore it is known as Chichewa (language of the Chewa). However, outsiders sometimes call the Chewa “Anyanja” (the people of the lake) because they live on the banks of Lake Malawi, and so they call their language “Chinyanja” (the language of the lake people).

In Zambia, they refer to the bastardised Zambian dialect of Chewa as Nyanja, and they use the label Chichewa for the more pure Malawian dialect, which is also spoken in Zambian areas on the border with Malawi. As for the examples you have given, there is no word “mafuna” in Chichewa or Zambian Nyanja. The Chewa would say ….mukufuna madzi?
